Partnership supports the largest rice methane reduction project in U.S. history
NASHVILLE, Tenn., January 14, 2024 – AgriCapture and Artemeter are proud to announce a strategic partnership driving capital into America’s heartland, while reducing methane emissions on farms across Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Kentucky and Texas.
AgriCapture’s Rice Methane Reduction Project is the largest rice methane reduction project in U.S. history and marks a breakthrough in climate-smart agriculture.
The collaboration leverages the carbon markets as a financial mechanism to incentivize U.S. rice farmers to adopt innovative techniques that significantly reduce methane emissions and increase water conservation in their farming practices. In a landmark transaction, Artemeter facilitated the asset purchase of 30,000 metric tons of carbon by a global institution with a leadership position in methane reductions.
“This partnership with Artemeter represents a pivotal step in expanding the impact of our Rice Methane Reduction Project,” said Tyler Hull, President of AgriCapture. “By creating a pathway for corporations to invest in agricultural sustainability, we’re not only reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also providing U.S. farmers with the financial incentives to adopt climate-smart practices.”
“We are honored to partner with AgriCapture and American farmers to reduce methane emissions through technology and capital markets. As a carbon investment manager, we’re on a mission to accelerate and scale high-quality carbon projects through market innovation. The agricultural industry needs more entrepreneurs like AgriCapture to help disrupt traditional industrial farming practices,” said Artemeter’s CEO Olivia Albrecht.
Rice farming traditionally emits methane emissions due to its flooded field conditions and poses a critical challenge for climate change mitigation. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential approximately 81 times greater than carbon dioxide over 20 years according to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) report on global warming potential. Since methane accounts for one-third of global warming, reducing emissions from rice production is essential to achieving global climate goals.
With AgriCapture’s technical assistance, participating rice farms have shown methane emissions reductions of up to 70%, when compared to conventional rice production, and have collectively saved over nine billion gallons of water, according to VVB data for credit issuance.
AgriCapture generates high-quality methane carbon credits by collecting detailed field data, quantifying environmental benefits with precision, and transparently reporting emissions reductions. These credits undergo rigorous third-party verification and are issued by the Climate Action Reserve.
This partnership highlights the strategic value for corporations seeking to meet sustainability goals while driving impact in regenerative agriculture. By purchasing carbon credits from the AgriCapture Rice Methane Reduction Project, companies can offset unavoidable emissions, support the transformation of U.S. agriculture, and promote new technology for greater efficiency and environmental impact.
